The advantages of solid carbide cutters

Hard metals are characterized by a number of advantages that make them very suitable for the manufacture of tools. Let's take a closer look at the most important ones:

Wear resistance / toughness
  • Very resistant to abrasive processes
  • Comparable to hardened steel in terms of toughness

E-modulus
  • significantly higher modulus of elasticity than conventional steels
  • between 400 and 650
  • significantly stiffer structures can be realized with the same moment of inertia

Hardness
  • significantly higher than conventional steels
  • soft grades with up to 750HV30
  • hard grades with up to 2000HV30

Compressive strength
  • very high under uniaxial load
  • compressive strength increases with decreasing binder content and grain size
  • up to 8,000 MPa

Density
  • about twice as high as conventional steel
  • between 12.75 - 15.20 g/cm³

Temperature resistance
  • up to 1,100 °C
  • significantly higher than conventional cutting materials such as high-speed steels

Rust resistance
  • cobalt-bonded carbides can also rust, but only on the surface
  • internal structure not susceptible, unlike steel

Compared to conventional cutting materials such as high-speed steels, carbides have lower thermal shock resistance and book toughness, but they are significantly harder and more temperature resistant.

Thanks to the associated higher abrasive wear resistance, significantly higher cutting speeds of up to 350 m/min are possible. Typical applications of carbide tools are therefore machining activities such as turning, drilling and milling.
