Wear resistance/toughness

High resistance to abrasive processes

Of course, there are a few small disadvantages and associated limitations of use with carbide.

It is a brittle material. No plastic deformation occurs before fracture.
Weight higher than comparable steel components
Cobalt used as binder less resistant to corrosion than nickel

Special HM cutters according to customer requirements

Primarily, special carbide cutters are produced according to customer requirements, whereby the quantities to be produced play only a subordinate role. Thus, in addition to small and medium series, special tools can also be offered in individual production.

HM milling cutters are manufactured for all cutting areas, both for cutting and non-cutting production. The geometries of the tools are always adapted to the respective application of the tools. Thus, the customers of Lehmann GmbH Präzisionswerkzeuge (L-PW) can be sure to always receive a tool produced to their special requirements.

All HM cutters can be offered to you with and without internal coolant supply and besides that, the company offers a variety of anti-wear coatings.

In complicated cases, competent application engineers support the customer in testing the tools.

The fields of application of hard metals

Carbide precision tools

Carbides are mainly used as cutting materials and for forming. The following advantages are to be emphasized in the respective areas.

Hard metals as cutting materials

Compared with conventional cutting materials such as high-speed steels, carbides have lower thermal shock resistance and fracture toughness, but they are significantly harder and more temperature-resistant overall.

Since carbide also has a higher abrasive wear resistance in this context, significantly higher cutting speeds of up to 350 m/min can be achieved with HM cutters. The most common areas of application therefore include machining activities such as turning, milling and drilling. Other areas of application are:

Knives in cigarette cutting machines
Ripping of hardwoods from the tropics
Tools for rock mills and mines

Hard metals during forming

A second important area in which hard metals are used is forming. They are used, for example, for the manufacture of dies and punches. They are very well suited here because of their high wear resistance. Typical areas of application include:

Impact extrusion
Wire drawing
Extrusion
Nozzles for textile spinning
